Heavyglare

Well before Facebook and Google, Heavyglare emerged in 1999 as an innovation in the eyewear industry. We were determined to provide specialty prescriptions for a vast selection of eyeglasses and sunglasses—completely online. While a local optometrist might be limited by chain store policies or high-volume demands, we focused on crafting eyewear that truly fit each individual. The vision was simple: Saying Yes When Others Say No. We partnered with different labs to provide our customers with exactly what they needed. We offered a diverse range of products - from specialty lenses and tints to sports glasses designed for peak performance - our goal was to ensure complete customer satisfaction. A Small Business With a Big Impact Word of our eyewear company spread quickly. Customers who had been unable to find the perfect frames or high-prescription solutions at their local optometrist discovered Heavyglare. We partnered with specialized professionals and built our own lab to solve even the rarest prescription challenges, ensuring our clients could experience clear vision. By 2000, our online presence was thriving, but we knew we could do more. We opened our first physical store, offering in-person consultations and building relationships with renowned brands. Our dedication to providing exceptional service and a vast selection of stylish frames, combined with our expertise in prescription lenses, has made us a trusted name in the eyewear industry. Today, we stand proudly as one of the world's leading online optical destinations, complemented by a thriving retail presence.

The challenge of project

  • Complex Product Customization and Configuration:
    • Challenge: Selling prescription glasses involves numerous variables (prescription details, lens types, coatings, frame sizes, colors, etc.). Building a seamless, intuitive, and technically sound product configurator that handles all these permutations accurately and efficiently can be very complex.
    • Technical Implications: This often requires extensive Liquid (Shopify’s templating language) customization, potentially custom JavaScript, and careful management of product variants to avoid “too many variants” issues (Shopify has a limit of 100 variants per product). Ensuring the correct pricing is applied based on all selected options is also a critical backend challenge.
  • Prescription Input and Validation:
    • Challenge: Accurately collecting and validating complex prescription data from customers (Sphere, Cylinder, Axis, ADD, PD for both eyes) is crucial. Incorrect input can lead to costly returns and dissatisfied customers.
    • Technical Implications: This might involve custom forms, client-side validation (JavaScript to check for valid number ranges, format, etc.), and potentially server-side validation. Integrating this data smoothly with their order fulfillment system and lab processes is another layer of complexity
